  • Curriculum Nights

At the heart of a Bobcat's learning experience is the partnership between our families and the school. Curriculum nights was a perfect way to focus on that connection and we thank all those who joined us. Parents talked with their teachers, staff, and fellow parents and heard about the planning and thinking behind what happens in the classroom. We look forward to a successful year and many more opportunities to engage and come together.
  • Everyone's an Artist at BHS

If you go by the art room this year, you will be greeted by posters with lines like: Everyone’s an Artist, Make Art with your Heart, Use your Giant Imagination, and Happy Accidents. Students colored these posters that express the vision for art this year with guidance from our new teacher Ms. Green.

This vision was easy to see when the third grade were in class this week working on their self-portraits. Our creative students were shown the work of American artist Maira Kalman for inspiration. They then set out to compose their own self-portraits - a process that got them thinking in new ways.  Some students said at first they felt awkward and embarrassed to look at themselves in the mirror to draw themselves. But they quickly got into it.

“I was excited by the number of details,”  Konstantin M. told us.

Olivia M. noted, “I was very inspired by Maira Kalman and I went home and searched her up and learned about her brush strokes.”

Sofia C. added, “Even though art sometimes doesn’t look realistic, it can still look beautiful when you make art with your heart.”

We look forward to a year full of inspiration and creativity for all our artistic Bobcats.
  • Meet the 2023 Mock Trial Team

This year's Mock Trial team is an outstanding one, tells us Mr. Fontaine. The team is preparing the case of "People vs Clark" for their Court dates in November at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown L.A.

Mock Trial is a Junior High elective where students participate in a countywide academic competition run by the Constitutional Rights Foundation (CFR). Our BHS teams have had great success in the past, advancing to the later stages of the competition,  thanks to their dedication and the expert guidance of Mr. Fontaine and our parent attorney coaches.
  • The Shield is Revealed!

The Shield Assembly is the culminating step in a months-long shield-making process in a special elective class. This year, nine members of the graduating class designed and built an incredible class shield, and during a special assembly held on Monday, May 22, they finally shared the finished project with the entire school community.

The nine students also talked about their experience on the shield team — writing mottos, creating mini shields, working with tools in the workshop, painting and repainting the shield. We then screened a video of the shield-making process, written and edited by one of the team members.

The students are proud of what they were able to accomplish together, and their teacher, Mr. Lignier says he has no doubt the BHS community is proud of them, too. Congratulations to the Shield team of 2023 and all the graduating students in the eighth grade!

  • A Visit to Remember

Students in grades 1-5 and Mr. Lignier's storytelling class were treated to a quackin' good time when Tad Hills, the author and illustrator of more than 20 books, including "Duck & Goose" and "How Rocket Learned to Read," visited the library on Tuesday.

Mr. Hills read them "Rocket Writes a Story," talked about the writing process, where to find inspiration, and how a book is published. He showed the students how his characters can be drawn using simple shapes and then painted the character of Duck in front of the students! The students asked many questions and made suggestions for future books Mr. Hills could write.

Our guest said he hoped his visit would inspire some of our Bobcats to become author/illustrators in the future.
This special event was paid for by book fair proceeds. A special thanks to all of our parents for supporting the book fair. Your generosity creates inspiring memories like this.
